Power outage compensation: how much am I owed and when?

Prepared from the official page

Power outage compensation is paid automatically, without a complaint: 50 riyals if power is not back within 3 hours of an unplanned outage, plus 50 for each extra hour. A planned outage beyond 6 hours earns 200 riyals, and 100 riyals if you were not notified two days before. It is credited to your bill within 10 working days.

Steps

  1. Unplanned outage, such as a fault: power must be back as soon as possible and within 3 hours of its start; otherwise you are owed 50 riyals plus 50 riyals for each extra hour or part of one. The authority's example: a sudden outage that lasted 6 hours earns 150 riyals.
  2. Planned outage for maintenance: you must be notified at least two days before; otherwise you are owed 100 riyals. Power must be back within 6 hours of its actual start; otherwise you are owed 200 riyals plus 50 riyals for each extra hour or part of one. If both apply to you, you get both amounts.
  3. Blackout of a whole city or governorate where power is not back within 6 hours: every consumer whose outage went beyond 6 hours is owed up to 1,000 riyals, plus the unplanned-outage compensation. Total compensation is capped at 200 million riyals per city or governorate.
  4. Reconnection after payment: if your power was cut for non-payment and you then paid, it must be back within two hours of the provider receiving the payment notice; otherwise you are owed 100 riyals plus 100 riyals for each extra hour or part of one.
  5. Disconnection at a prohibited time or in a prohibited case: power must be restored at once, and you are owed 500 riyals. This includes cutting power for non-payment during Ramadan and public-school exam periods for residential use, after 12 noon, outside the provider's working hours, before the disconnection date shown on the bill, and while a formal bill complaint is undecided.
  6. Disconnection for non-payment is also prohibited when someone registered for the service for people with critical electricity needs lives in the property.
  7. You do not need to complain or claim: the compensation reaches you within 10 working days of the end of the case, is added as a credit to your bill, and you may ask for it to be transferred to your bank account.
  8. The compensation covers all consumer categories, such as residential, commercial, agricultural, government and industrial, and every electricity provider licensed for transmission, or for distribution and retail, must apply it.
  9. The standards do not apply to cases beyond the provider's administrative control, such as disasters, spreading fires, earthquakes, floods and epidemics, unless the authority finds the provider at fault.
  10. Note the time the outage began and the time power came back, because the period is counted from the start of the outage.
  11. If the compensation you are owed does not arrive: complain to the electricity company on 933 first; if you object to the outcome or it is handled late, file a complaint with the Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority through the Complaint Service on its website after signing in with Nafath, or on 19944. The steps are on the Dalni page on the electricity company number.

Have ready:

  • The type of outage: unplanned, planned, or a city-wide blackout
  • Whether you received advance notice of the outage, and when
  • Your next bill, to check the compensation was added
  • Your complaint number with the electricity company, if you escalate to the authority
